Did anyone find the ending anti-climatic? We Have Always Lived in the Castle has a very straightforward plot and the "twist" is fairly predictable, being narrated the way it is, but because it's narrated the way it is, the plot is not the most important thing. 1995 was my Shirley Jackson year. Yes, I've talked about We Have Always Lived in the Castle several times, but I'm really feeling it lately. I always imagined a horror book to be different. I read six books by Jackson and two about her. WHALC so supremely embodies the hyper-isolated sister experience I long for. Based on the novel by Shirley Jackson, We Have Always Lived in the Castle is the second recent musical that has caught my eye as having much potential. I was entranced from this opening line of We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson and was immediately immersed in the mystery and suspense. DSCN0101 We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson is just about as creepy as the front cover makes it look. We Have Always Lived in the Castle was the last book Jackson published before she died (somewhat tragically) three years later in 1965. Previously I'd only known her through "Charles" and "The Lottery"--school fare. But alas, all things must come to an end, and what an interesting end We Have Always Lived in the Castle has come to. Constance Blackwood, age 28, and her 18-year-old sister Merricat have lived alone in a mansion with their Uncle Julian for the past six years. Shirley Jackson is one of the best "horror" writers ever and We Have Always Lived in the Castle (1962) is one of the best covers ever (thanks to artist William Teason). I didn't even realize We Have Always lived in the Castle was a horror until I was through most of it - and I'm so glad. The rest of the family was poisoned with arsenic at dinner one night. It is not scary by any means, but weird, eccentric, and eldritch, yes. We Have Always Lived in the Castle has been on my want-to-read list for quite some time, and my interest only intensified after seeing it on many a blogger's list for Carl's annual R.eaders I.mbibing P.eril Challenge.
